Where to start installing skirting boards?

Skirting boards are now an absolute standard. It would be difficult to imagine finishing an apartment, commercial premises or office without this element of stucco. They really have many functions – not only aesthetic, as you might think. First of all, they mask expansion gaps. However, before you decide on such a solution, it is necessary to check how to fix skirting boards and what accessories to reach for. Let’s start with the basics.

Substrate preparation

The substrate must be clean, dry and stable. Before installation, remove dust, dirt and remnants of paint or plaster that could weaken the adhesion of the adhesive. In the case of walls with uneven surfaces, it is necessary to level them with joint compound, so that profiles adhere along the entire length. If profiles are to be mounted on a painted wall, it is recommended to first roughen the surface with fine-grained sandpaper (gradation 180-240) and degrease with a damp cloth.

Choosing the right product

Before you start gluing skirting boards, you are faced with the purchase of the selected model. The choice is really difficult, so be guided by the quality of the material from which they were created profiles. The exemplars available in our store are made of PolyForce – a dense polymer, which is characterized by high resistance to mechanical damage. It is completely waterproof, so it does not swell when exposed to moisture. But that’s not all – we also made sure that skirting boards were additionally hardened. For this, we used ScratchShield technology, which is a special hardener that prevents scratching. Each profile is covered with a layer of primer, so it has increased adhesion for water-based paints. You can paint our stucco with acrylic, latex or ceramic paints. Choose the geometric MDO1O profile, which is perfect for minimalist spaces, or bet on the elaborate, multifunctional MDO3O skirting board.

Mounting adhesives – which is the best choice?

When installing our stucco, you don’t need screws or dowels. All you need are a few basic tools and a strong mounting adhesive. We have three products for you to achieve a polished arrangement.

Mardom Fix Pro

It is a fast-drying mounting adhesive designed for fixing skirting boards, ceiling rosettes and profiles on porous building substrates – mineral plaster, gypsum, concrete or even wood. Mardom Fix Pro is primarily characterized by extremely high initial adhesion – more than 140 kg/m³. It is odorless and contains no solvents, so it poses no threat to decorative materials. The adhesive does not run off vertical surfaces and the ceiling, levels small irregularities in the substrate, and can be painted after curing. One 300 ml tube is enough for about 8 running meters profiles or 4 slatted wall panels.

How to use Mardom Fix Pro mounting adhesive? Using a glue gun, apply the product to the inside of the piece to be mounted. You can do it in the form of a band, dots or waves – it is important to spread it evenly to ensure a stable bond.

After applying the glue, the item must be pressed against the wall and held for several seconds. The glue should dry 24-72 hours, depending on the ambient conditions. If necessary, remove excess glue with a damp cloth before it dries. It is not necessary to use detergents.

Mardom Max

This is a very strong and fast-setting hybrid adhesive, designed for the installation of large and heavy stucco elements on both porous and smooth surfaces. You can apply it to ceramic tiles or glass. It is characterized by instant grip – about 8 seconds – in practice this means that you do not need to support the mounted elements. The adhesive is odorless, does not contain solvents, and after curing it can be painted with water-based paints. It is ideal for installing curtain profiles, skirting boards and other stucco elements requiring a strong and durable bond. It is worth mentioning that Mardom Max allows installation on slightly damp surfaces.

Mardom Fix Extra

This is a proposal for those who care about aesthetic joints. Mardom Fix Extra dedicated to grouting moldings, ceiling rosettes and profiles provides a durable and flexible connection that compensates for movements of materials due to stress or temperature changes. After curing, the adhesive can be sanded or even painted – this way you will get an aesthetic finish without visible joints. Mardom Fix Extra hardens under the influence of moisture contained in the air or in the surfaces to be glued. During installation, you can leave it to dry naturally, or slightly moisten the application site with water, which will speed up the polyurethane setting process and shorten the drying time. With its help you will accurately bond stucco created with our technologies – PolyForce, as well as ProFoam.

How to glue skirting boards?

Installing skirting boards using mounting glue is a popular method that provides a durable and aesthetically pleasing interior finish in a variety of styles. However, before you proceed, see how to glue profiles floorboards to guarantee the best result.

Substrate preparation

Before installation, the surface on which profiles will be mounted should be properly prepared. The wall should be clean, dry, degreased and free of dust and peeling paint. If necessary, it is recommended to wipe the wall with a damp cloth and wait until it is completely dry.

Acclimatization of profiles

Leave profiles in the room where they will be installed for at least 24 hours. This will allow the material to adapt to the temperature and humidity conditions of the interior – this way you will minimize the risk of later deformation. If you choose skirting boards created from PolyForce plastic, you can safely skip this step.

Cutting profiles

Carefully measure the length of the walls and cut profiles to the appropriate dimensions. You can use a mitre saw or a handsaw for cutting. It is important that the edges are even and smooth; if necessary, smooth them with sandpaper.

Glue application

Apply glue to the inner side of profiles skirting board with the help of a gun. It is recommended to apply the glue in even strips, paying special attention to the edges and the center profiles.

Mounting profiles

After applying the glue, gently apply the profile to the wall in the appropriate place, pressing lightly so that the glue spreads evenly under the surface profiles. Hold the profile for a few minutes and make sure the glue begins to set.

Masking joints and finishing

After installing all the profiles, check that they are securely fastened and evenly adhered to the wall and floor. Mask the joints between the profiles with Mardom Max glue or installation putty. Remove excess product and wait for it to dry completely.

Valuable tips, or what to keep in mind?

Did you know that you can easily make the most of your skirting boards 100%? All you have to do is discover the full potential of stucco. We have prepared for you valuable tips that will improve the consistency of your space:

  • Hiding unsightly cables – skirting boards is a great way to hide what shouldn’t be in plain sight, such as cables from the TV or bedside lamp. MDOO4, MDO27 or QLO21 designed by Tomek Rogalik – one of the most popular industrial designers – are just some of the many proposals that have a special space for cables.
  • Playing with light – some skirting boards have been enhanced with LightGuard technology, which is the best profile highlighting system on the market. It involves the use of specialized enhancers – both in the coating of the exterior and interior of the profile, to exclude any clearances and imperfections. As a result, our products can be successfully used with LED lighting.
  • Free samples – not sure if a particular skirting board will be the best solution in your case? At your disposal is a section, or more precisely 11 cm of full-fledged product, which you can test even in the most difficult conditions.
