3 ways to install skirting boards
Skirting boards are the last, but extremely important stage of proper installation and finishing of the floor. Thanks to them, the interior of our house not only looks aesthetically pleasing, but also the floor gains additional protection against flooding and dirt. It is this protection that makes the correct installation of skirting boards so important for finishing the interior. In today’s article we will present up to three methods of installing floor profiles.
What will you learn from this article?
Properly installed skirting boards can significantly extend the life of your floor, protecting it from everyday mechanical damage and the effects of moisture. These profiles also have a decorative function, hiding expansion gaps between the wall and floor, which gives the interior a finished and consistent look. There are several different methods of installing skirting boards, which differ in the degree of difficulty and the appropriate tools needed to do the job. Choosing the right method depends on: the type of profiles, the material of the walls, as well as personal aesthetic preferences. The correct method of installation in the final stage of construction makes it possible to achieve perfectly even joints of elements while maintaining the functionality of the entire system.
Skirting boards – skirting board installation methods
Skirting boards come in many different models, finishes and materials. Each of them requires a different method of installation, adapted to the material we are working with, but also our capabilities and, moreover, our knowledge of self-assembly.
Installation with glue
The first and by far the easiest option is to install the profiles with glue, directly to the wall. Gluing is a very fast method, which at the same time allows you to achieve a lasting and aesthetic result with minimal effort. It’s worth knowing a few things before you start installing skirting boards with this method. First, the method of applying the glue – we recommend applying the product along the entire length of the profile in a wavy motion. This will ensure that the skirting board will stick well to the wall and will not fall off after time.

rnKlej aplikować po długości listwy, na płaskiej powierzchni.
Mounting skirting boards with mounting glue
Attention! Apply glue along the length of the profiles, on a flat surface.
A very important element is also the good adhesive used. There are many variants available on the market with different bonding times. The longer this time is, the longer we can work with a given profile and correct its positioning on the wall, but this affects the extended installation time of profiles. We also have a choice of adhesives with instant bonding time and strength. Their indisputable advantage is their incredible durability, but it should be remembered that such glue will instantly fix the profiles to the wall, not giving us too much time for any corrections to the alignment.
When choosing an adhesive, you should also check what material and task it is dedicated to. Adhesives are divided into mounting adhesives and adhesives for bonding:
Mardom Fix Pro is a multifunctional adhesive that will work well both as a mounting adhesive (for PolyForce and ProFoam) and as a joint adhesive (for PolyForce). Its standard setting time allows for some corrections in the positioning of the profiles on the wall. Thus, it will be perfect for less skilled installers carrying out the installation of floor profiles.
Mardom Max is a mounting adhesive with extreme bonding strength and an instant grab time of just 8 seconds. Such glue is perfect for difficult substrates or heavy profiles, mounted at great heights. The durability of the bond between the molding and the substrate gives 100% assurance that the profile will not fall off the wall. When installing a profile on Mardom Max glue, you need to keep in mind that the speed of grip does not give too much opportunity in possible corrections of the alignment. Such glue will therefore work well for experienced installers.
Mardom Fix Extra is an adhesive used on joints for products made of ProFoam. Its composition allows for precise sanding, so that the joints between profiles can be permanently and invisibly finished.
Choosing the right adhesive is the basis for a lasting and trouble-free installation of skirting boards, so take the time to analyze the specifics of each product in the Mardom range. Each of the presented adhesives has been developed with different user needs in mind – from novice installers who appreciate the possibility of corrections, to experienced professionals who need instant and reliable bonding.
Screws
The screw method requires drilling holes in the wall, where the wall studs will be installed along with the screws. It is with their help that we will fix the skirting boards to the surface. Along the entire length, we should drill holes every 40-50 cm, using basic tools. The holes must also be in the profiles. We should pay special attention to ensure that the distances between the holes on the profiles perfectly coincide with those on the wall. Then it’s enough to press the profiles to the surface, put the pegs in the holes and fix the elements to the pegs with screws or nails using a screwdriver. This is a method that will work well for wooden skirting boards, but you can also use it to install dedicated PVC skirting boards and MDF skirting boards. Screws are used when you need to increase the certainty that the profile will be perfectly fixed, for example, in rooms intended for public use, where the product is more vulnerable to damage.
Mounting clamps (clips)
Special clamps or clips should be attached to the wall at a distance of 40 – 50 cm each. Then it is enough to put skirting boards on them. It is not necessary to drill holes in the profiles. This is a quick method that will work for both MDF and PVC profiles. Attaching profiles using this method requires properly selected buckles for a particular type of profile. The buckles work in such a way that they help to attach and immobilize the profile to the substrate to which the molding is mounted.
Skirting boards – installation tips
Correct installation of skirting boards is a process that requires proper preparation and the use of proper techniques. In any case, the installation of floor profiles should be preceded by a thorough analysis of the conditions in the room and the selection of an appropriate mounting method. Installation by this method should be done with the highest standards, paying attention to every detail of workmanship.
When proceeding to install skirting boards, pay attention to the following aspects:
– Before installing the profiles, ensure that the space is: clean, vacuumed and degreased. Maintaining cleanliness during the work is indispensable for a durable joint.
– When choosing an installation method, you should be guided by the material from which the profile is made. However, it is worth checking first whether the manufacturer has provided information on the application and installation method. If there is one, it should be strictly followed, otherwise a possible product claim may not be accepted.
– It is worth taking care of the highest possible quality of the substrate. A dry, primed, painted, straight and stable wall will increase the durability of the profiles and ensure their proper functioning for a long time.
Proper installation requires the use of necessary accessories and careful adherence to instructions. Each stage of construction or renovation requires precision, and the installation of profiles in the corners of walls especially requires care. Accurate execution of all operations allows you to avoid possible mistakes in the future.
What to follow when choosing floor profiles?
Nowadays on the market we can find skirting boards of various shapes, textures and finishes for any type of interior. So how do we choose skirting boards to suit our needs? Choosing a profile is a decision that will affect the aesthetics and functionality of the entire room.
Materiał
Profiles are made of different materials, which affects: how they are installed, cared for, as well as the need for any refreshing treatments. Budget models are PVC profiles. Generally available and made of plastic, they show resistance to water and dirt. They do not require additional care and are easy to maintain, however, they shine artificially and are easily deformed under the pressure of, for example, furniture.
Another type is MDF profiles, that is, created from wood-based tiles, covered on the outside with a special veneer – from smooth and glossy, to matte and subtly textured. They perfectly match the wood floor, as a cheaper equivalent of real wood. They require no maintenance and can be installed profiles in any color after proper preparation.
Wood profiles are durable and strong decorative elements, but they require cyclical maintenance to maintain an impeccable appearance. The last option is polyurethane wall profiles. These from Mardom Decor are characterized by high resistance to mechanical damage (thanks to patented ScratchShield® technology), water and sunlight. They can be installed in any room in the house, and these will not fade or change color under UV exposure. They require neither additional wall plugs nor drilling when installing, just the right adhesive.

Dimensions
When choosing skirting boards, keep in mind that their installation is intended to protect the floor panels and cover the gap created during installation. Expansion gaps most often have a standard width of 5-10 mm, but everything depends on: the type of floors laid, the installation method and the installer himself. The profiles we choose should be wide enough to cover an unsightly-looking gap in the floor.
Skirting boards of sufficient width will effectively mask the gap between the panels and the wall. Another aspect is also the height of the profiles and their shape. Some moldings are designed to hide cables and any household wires behind them. Thanks to this, profiles are not only an aesthetically pleasing element of the room’s finish, but also mask expansion gaps, perform a very important function of protecting floor panels from moisture and dust, and hide any household wiring.
Color matching
White skirting boards are the most popular stucco element. They are a perfect neutral accessory that will work for any type of interior, regardless of its style or purpose. However, what if we dreamed in our rooms profiles matching the color of the wall or even in a contrasting shade?
Mardom Decor profiles are covered with a special primer, which allows you to paint them any color you want without any problems. The primer makes it easier to spread the pigment and increases its durability. Just paint the skirting boards with water-based paint and you’re done. However, if you dream of white floor profiles of high quality, resistant to: impact, water and sunlight, in our offer you will find lacquered profiles, which after purchase are immediately ready for installation. They can be easily cut profiles with the help of a miter box, which makes the work much easier. Cleaning of the finished profiles is sufficient with a damp cloth, which further emphasizes their practicality in everyday use.
